Full-time program Drawing & Painting

The full-time program at the Academy of Fine Art Germany takes approximately three years. It is divided into the two most important topics of art: drawing and oil painting. To provide you with the best education, we emphasize fundamental skills. Everybody starts—regardless of their previous experience—with drawing. In addition to honing your technical skills, you will draw or paint from life several times a week. Furthermore, you will be taught anatomy, composition, memory drawing, but also marketing, law basics and financial management.

To complete both parts you will need approximately three years. (As we offer a three-pronged model of part-time attendance, the total amount of time needed can vary. In addition, the level of your personal engagement can also influence the time you will need to complete all course work.)

Overview
In this program you are taught the skills that define an artist—the ability to transfer the perceived onto paper in a realistic manner. The course ‘Realistic Drawing’ will take approximately one year to complete and will provide you with the foundation for your future career choice. The course topics are relevant to traditional artists as well as digital artists, designers, illustrators, and tattoo artists.

Curriculum
Instruction centers on studio practice. The majority of work will take place at the easel and is taught by professionals. For example:

  • Figurative Drawing
Our students are able to work with live models for more than 360 hours per academic year. You, too, will master the depiction of proportions, gestures, facial expressions, and anatomy.
  • Theory for drawing
Applied theory is the art of understanding situations and depicting them realistically in a drawing. Areas covered will include perception, light and shadow, image design, and many more. These topics will support your ability to depict three-dimensional objects or a human figure in a two-dimensional drawing.
  • Gesture Drawing & Quick Sketching
Drawing a realistic and believable human character in a few minutes takes practice. In a professional context, this might determine whether you get a commission or not. Our students practice this skill intensely with the aid of real-life models and concepts such movement sequences or staged scenes.
  • Memory Drawing
You will not always have a real-life model or authentic object in front of you. For this reason it is important that you train your memory and acquire methods for implementation. Especially in the areas of character design and image design these skills are vital.

Overview
Anybody who has ever tried to paint something understands how complex the process really is. To create an image, whether digitally or on canvas, that has depth and believable realistic features requires more than just picking the right tone/shade/color palette. Our students are intensively instructed in this area, so that they can apply their expertise confidently to the realisation of future professional projects.

The program takes approximately two years and is meant to be the specialization for students who have completed the foundation course in realistic drawing.

Curriculum
Instruction centers on studio practice. The majority of work will take place at the easel and is taught by professionals. For example:

  • Color theory
Some of the topics we cover are color mixing, color harmony, working with light and shadow colors, transitions and the terminator line, as well as preparing and mixing pigments. A strong foundation in this area is essential as it ensures the competent handling of oil paint.
  • Figurative painting
Depicting human skin in oil painting is a challenge. Daily training and working with real-life models allows students to become experienced and develop a reliable routine.
  • Projects / Concept Art
The program of study will prepare you for project-based work, which is the main mode of professional creative production. Usually, a client or employer has an idea that needs to be brought to life within a specific time frame. This necessitates research, sketching, image design, as well as collaboration and teamwork. The courses at the Academy of Fine Art Germany provide practice in this process and will thus prepare you for a successful professional future.
  • Composition
This aspect of the course will teach you how to compose and construct an image, which adheres to all rules of perspective but is still engaging to the viewer. The students learn techniques and rules, applying them to their own projects and acquiring the ability to design scenes that can be transferred to canvas or implemented digitally.
  • Furthermore, block seminars on topics such as gallery contracts, rights and responsibilities of an artist, as well as marketing and self-presentation, will be taught by art professionals.
