“BAföG” is the short form for “Bundesausbildungsförderungsgesetz” (Federal Training Assistance Act). The aim is to give young people the opportunity to complete an education that matches their abilities and interests, regardless of their social and economic situation

Who can apply for BAföG?

  • Young people who start their school education or studies before reaching the age of 30
  • People with German citizenship
  • Foreigners who have a residence perspective. These are people who have already been living in Germany for 5 years or are married to a person who has a German passport or are the daughter and son of a parent with a German passport.
  • Persons admitted for asylum as well as refugees who have been living in Germany for 15 months without interruption on a legal, permitted or tolerated basis.

From when and how much support will I receive?

  • The funding starts at the earliest with the month of application, even if the training has started earlier!
  • The amount of BAföG you receive per month depends on your personal circumstances. During the application process, you have to show your financial situation and then it will be determined whether and how much you will be supported each month.
  • At the moment, the maximum rate is 754 € per month and can also be lower, depending on the classification of the BAföG office.

Until when must I repay the contributions and in what amount?

  • In case the BAföG funding is classified as a grant, nothing has to be paid back. It is a free gift from the state. If the BAföG funding is classified as a 50% grant and 50% loan, only the 50% loan must be paid back – the other 50% remains a gift.
  • The amount that has to be repaid is interest-free. Furthermore, you only start repaying the loan 5 years after you graduate and have 20 years to repay it. Generally, you do not have to repay more than 10,010 euros, even if the loan was higher.
